Nina

I gotta admit, this was the most exciting and heart-thumping experience I’d ever had in my entire life. For once, I wasn’t getting this kind of thrill while stealing from or fooling someone else. The happiness I felt at succeeding in my first con couldn’t even compare to this feeling－and to think I was only getting a bath!

Despite Janus’ demeanor and his determination to show he was the fearsome boss of this craft, I felt oddly safe in his presence.

Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to spend more time exploring the unusual security I was feeling with Janus, I was my own person and I didn’t belong to anyone. Not even when everyone around me was so keen to pair me up with a mate I didn’t ask for.

That was Nina Bucky for you.

I refused to linger on how good it felt when he tenderly massaged my scalp as he washed my hair, never mind that no one had ever done that for me before, not even my parents… If I had enough memories to recall them in the first place.

A mated life wasn’t for me. Too many years alone had passed and the little Nina who dreamt of family — a mate, kids, and home — was long gone. The universe might have decided to give all of those to her now, but guess what, universe? It was too little, too late.

I just wanted to get all my kicks and milk all the fun I could from this experience before I hightailed it out of here. And, of course, I wouldn’t be leaving empty-handed. I was dying to get my hands on Janus’s sweet ride.

“Get up,” he ordered gruffly, sending thrills down my spine. I stopped myself from preening and smiling smugly, even though I could feel the air between us vibrating with sexual awareness.

I did as he told me. Standing up from the tub slowly, I watched him as his eyes greedily followed the drops of water cascading down my body. His hand shot out to grab my waist as I took a step out of the tub.

I steeled my heart from thumping hard at the protective gesture. He couldn’t have done that so I wouldn’t slip while I left the tub, could he?

When he turned to reach for a towel, my gaze caught on to something at the top of his washstand, beside his towel dispenser. It was one of those hygiene files I knew Janus’s kind used to trim their nails and shape the tip of their tails. I found it really interesting to watch them do that in videos, but that wasn’t the reason why I was interested in it right now.

I was tempted to ask him to do that for me. However, I quickly dismissed that ridiculous thought. It would only mean I’d have to stay by the Captain’s side as his mate, and that shit wasn’t happening.

I took a step toward the washstand and made a show of looking at myself in his holo-mirror.
